On 28th June 1919, President Woodrow Wilson lead the American procession out of the Treaty of Versailles. Earlier that day, the German were summoned to Versailles to sign the treaty–but it was not the treaty Wilson wanted or not the reason Wilson sailed across the Atlantic. Wilson’s this singular act ushered in the modern era of summit conferences. The decision of the president to personally travel to the Paris Peace Conference was propelled by his desire to pursue the ambitious Fourteen Points. However, the final treaty bore little resemblance to Wilson’s fourteen points. Wilson was convinced that the League of Nations, if inaugurated, would correct the imperfections of the Treaty. However, America would hibernate back to its isolationist past, and the League of Nations itself would prove to be a misguided adventure.
